Fun Ways to Incorporate Your Children in Your Wedding Photo Shoot

Gone are the days when wedding invitations told you not to bring kids. As the world grows more sensitive to people’s obligations and responsibilities, we have been seeing children showing up at weddings right alongside their parents. But since it is such a rare sight, and because children have traditionally been shunned from wedding events, many people often end up scratching their heads when they try to work out ways to incorporate children into wedding photo shoots.

Luckily for you, we have some ideas.

Have Them Hold Signs!

Wondering what to do with children in order to make them pose? We as photographers understand why parents are confused about how to tell their children to pose—because kids usually have a hard time staying still and love to make weird faces when you point a camera at them. Others shy away. But if you want something more organized and sophisticated, have signs pre-made and hand them out to the children. These could be signs announcing the arrival of the bride—a trend that has really picked up in the past years. And then, when these children walk down the aisle, we can take their photos right on cue!

Flower Girls and Ring Bearers

This really is the ideal job for kids at a wedding. It gives them something to do, other than running about. A flower girl with her basket of petals will make a very pretty shot, so will a ring bearer. These poses also ensure that your children are usually near the bride and/or groom, which means they will definitely be a part of the main wedding photoshoot. They might even be in every picture—save the couple’s intimate photos!

Let Them Be

The best advice we can give any parent concerned about having their children’s pictures taken is to let their children be. Allow them to be children. Don’t be after them, scolding them, or disciplining them for being kids. They will frolic, they will run about, and there’s nothing wrong with it.

We as photographers know when and where to catch them in the perfect shot, whether they’re looking into the camera or not. Candids usually look better than photos in which children are posing, and you should depend on your photographer to find the best shot.

Of course, all you need is a good photographer.
