Should Your Partner Be Included in Your Maternity Photos?

Many expecting mothers wonder whether their husband or partner should be included in maternity photos or whether the session should focus mostly on them. The answer does not have to be one or the other.

During a professional Dallas maternity photography session, your partner can be included for part of the experience while still leaving plenty of room for individual portraits, wardrobe changes, and photographs that focus entirely on you. For most clients, that combination creates more variety without turning the entire maternity session into a couples photoshoot.

If you are still deciding what type of session fits what you want, my Maternity Experience explains how studio, fine art, and outdoor maternity photography can be customized.

Should Your Husband or Partner Be in Your Maternity Photos?

If having photographs together matters to you, I recommend including your partner in at least part of the session. That does not mean every image needs to be a couple portrait. After photographing maternity clients since 2013, I have found that a mixture usually gives clients the strongest gallery.

Your session may include:

  • Individual maternity portraits
  • Maternity photos with your husband or partner
  • Close-up pregnancy details
  • Different gowns or outfits
  • Wider outdoor photographs
  • More polished editorial portraits

For clients searching for maternity photos with husband, partner maternity photos, or a couple maternity photoshoot in Dallas, this approach gives you photographs together without taking attention away from the maternity portraits themselves.

What If Your Partner Does Not Like Taking Photos?

This is one of the most common concerns I hear. Many husbands and partners tell me right away that they do not like being photographed or have no idea what to do in front of the camera. That is completely workable because I do not expect either person to know how to pose.

I provide direction throughout the session, including:

  • Where each person should stand
  • How close to position yourselves
  • Where hands should go
  • Which direction to turn
  • When to look at the camera or at each other

One thing I have noticed over years of maternity sessions is that reluctant partners usually become more comfortable once they realize the direction is specific. They are not being asked to invent poses or perform for the camera.

That is worth considering when comparing a maternity photographer in Dallas who includes partners and provides posing guidance versus a session where couples are expected to direct themselves.

How Much of the Maternity Session Should Include Your Partner?

There is no set amount. I usually prefer to create couple portraits during one or more portions of the session and then transition back into individual maternity photographs. This keeps the gallery varied and also means your partner does not have to be photographed during every gown or setup.

A maternity gallery can include both connection and individuality. For example, we may begin with a few portraits together, move into solo photographs, change the wardrobe, and then include your partner again if the next look works well for couple portraits.

That flexibility is especially helpful during a professional maternity photoshoot in Dallas because different gowns, lighting setups, and locations can photograph very differently.

What Makes Couple Maternity Photos Look Natural?

Natural-looking photographs still require direction. The goal is not to leave couples standing together and hope something works. Instead, I use small adjustments that help the photograph feel less stiff.

That might mean:

  • Positioning your partner slightly behind you
  • Turning your bodies toward one another
  • Walking together
  • Holding hands
  • Using a close side embrace
  • Having one person look toward the camera while the other looks toward them

Height differences also matter. Sometimes moving one person only a few inches or changing the shoulder angle makes the composition look much more balanced. I intentionally keep this different from a full posing lesson because I recently covered maternity photo poses for couples in more detail for clients who want specific couple pose ideas.

Are Couple Photos Better in the Studio or Outdoors?

Both can work extremely well, but they create different results. With studio maternity photography in Dallas, I have more control over lighting, background, and body position. Couple portraits may feel cleaner, more polished, or more editorial.

Outdoor sessions allow more movement. Walking, wider compositions, and interacting with the surrounding landscape can make partner photographs feel a little more relaxed. I photograph outdoor maternity sessions throughout the Dallas area, so I also consider how the location, available light, terrain, and gown will affect the way I position a couple.

If you are deciding between the two, my Studio vs. Outdoor Maternity Photos article goes deeper into how each setting photographs.

What Should Your Partner Wear for Maternity Photos?

Your partner’s clothing should complement your maternity outfit without competing with it. For most couple maternity photography in Dallas, solid colors and simple clothing photograph better than large logos, heavy patterns or outfits that demand too much attention.

A few things I recommend:

  • Coordinate colors instead of matching exactly
  • Keep patterns understated
  • Consider how formal your maternity gown is
  • Choose clothing appropriate for the location
  • Avoid distracting graphics or logos

Wardrobe also affects posing. A fitted maternity dress may work well with close couple portraits, while a fuller couture gown might photograph better with your partner positioned slightly farther back.

My Maternity Gown Collection includes more than 40 gowns along with jewelry and styling pieces, and I can help coordinate your partner’s clothing around the look you choose.

Do You Need Couple Photos in Every Maternity Outfit?

No, and I usually would not recommend it. Repeating similar couple photographs in every outfit can make the final gallery feel repetitive. Instead, I look at which gown, lighting setup, or location works particularly well for partner photographs and use other portions of the session for individual portraits.

This is one of those details that is easier to decide during the actual session because I can see how the wardrobe, body angles, and light are photographing in real time. The goal is variety rather than checking off the exact same pose in every outfit.
